The Baytown Historical Preservation Association, along with the Harris County Historical Commission and Baytown Parks and Recreation, will host a marker dedication program for the Bayland Guards on Saturday, September 18, at 10 a.m., at Bayland Park.  CLICK HERE FOR FLYER.

This Civil War unit was raised by Dr. Ashbel Smith and made up of men from east Harris County and west Chambers county.  After training under Smith at his Evergreen Plantation, they were mustered in as Company C on April 17, 1861.

Prior to its assignment to the Second Texas Infantry, some men grew impatient to see action and joined other units; others from the area joined after they were sworn in. Some of the names from the "original" muster roll were misspelled and incorrectly transcribed.  Read more about the Bayland Guards in Wanda Orton's recent article in The Baytown Sun by CLICKING HERE.

We would like to recognize all area descendants of these men at the dedication. CLICK HERE TO SEE A LIST OF THE NAMES IN THE ORIGINAL GROUP. If you are a descendant, please contact Trevia Wooster Beverly at 713.864.6862 or treviawbeverly@comcast.net.
